1.
I’m living for the moment when you pick up the phone, sitting under street lights waiting while your best friends hurry home. I’ve spent all evening watching car after car drive by, speeding to get where they’re going like they don’t have enough time, and I’m an afternoon away. I was missing what I thought was love, until it fell into my waiting arms, and I said, “hey now, isn’t this the good life?” So take a breath, close your eyes, and let your doubts fade away tonight because our real world’s become a dream we don’t have to wake up from. I’ll be turning 20 in just a matter of days, and I’ve barely had to live to learn that life works in mysterious ways. When I first saw you that October afternoon, I didn’t know what to say, except “it’s too good to be true.”

The Beach 03:16
She and I were not so different, two kids who lived by the ocean. She spent every Monday morning laying in the sand. We’d run through this town in our bare feet, celebrate Christmas with palm trees, and I miss her so. So let’s fall asleep on a westbound train, wake up on a beach in California, and let’s just move wherever our shoes happen to take us. She wears her heart upon her sleeve of the sweater she borrowed from me, and I can barely hear it beat over the sound of my chattering teeth. This November breeze is biting at my cheeks, and suddenly I am beginning to miss the beach. One little word is all it takes, we’ll say goodbye to the Great Lakes State.
3.
We sat and watched the sun go down last night from the corners of our eyes, you and I were both waking up from a rough night’s sleep in the daylight. I can read you like a book and we’re on the same page. So forget about your doubts, and then just turn around and look me in the face, and say to me so loud and clear tonight: “Take off your clothes, turn on your radio, and sing me something if you can.” You’ve proven to me time and time again, why you’re my hometown heroine. How do we keep our sanity when we haven’t seen the sun in weeks? We’re more alive than we’ll ever feel, guess that explains why we never sleep.
4.
Stay Up Late 03:21
And I will test the ground you and I are standing on, hoping it’ll hold us up while we race towards the sun. We’ll find ourselves down at the beach, waves crashing down on you and me. Drying off while the sun sets down, with sand in our shoes we’ll hit up this town and we’ll stay up late. I’m just waiting for the chance to say to you this is the best night of my life, and we’ll stay up late tonight. Is it normal to feel like I’m floating on a cloud? You’ve gone and untied the anchor that my legs were wrapped around. So will you be there to rescue me if this summer breeze blows me away, into the sun that has yet to rise? All I see are stars on this flight, so let’s stay up late tonight.

I keep your picture close, when this weight that I choose to hold multiplies, doesn’t subside, and my knees begin to fold. Sometimes in the afternoon I wake up in this empty room, it’s a prison that I lock myself in because I don’t wanna lose you. Hell knows I’ve only tried as best I can, but I’m so tired tonight. So lay my bones on this bed to rest. I wanna live in the past, so I can die with it. As much as I’d kill to stay, life just isn’t gonna wait. Give me the key to my own city, so I can throw it away. There’s nothing on this page, just lines and empty space; it’s all I can show for months at home thinking of things to say. I can’t describe you, even though I’ve tried to, some clever words and a shitty voice could never do you justice. Ever wish you were somebody else? I just wish I were somebody else.
6.
Sadie 03:30
If you’re asking how long I’m willing to wait, just ask these shoes planted firmly in place. I’d speak but for now, I have little to say. You’ve probably guessed that the silence is my saving grace. How long is it worth it to wait here, when being alone is what keeps us together? Sadie are you listening? I tell you I can keep a promise. You’ve got a question, here’s the answer: I can make this all okay. If it’s time that you need, you can have all you want; I’ll be here until these hands fall right off this clock. Your eyes could never meet mine staring straight at the floor. I’ve been alone all these nights, what’s another one more?
7.
Your Holiday 03:31
You’re waking up, do you feel better now that your high school pasttimes have all fallen by the wayside? You’ve passed the test, do you feel smarter? Just because you’ve opened up your eyes doesn’t mean you’ve seen the light. Now this is just a test of your faith, so consider this case closed. When you’re sick and tired of your games, I’ll be waiting for you when you get back home. But you can’t pretend it’s summer when you’re up to your knees in fallen leaves, and you can’t live in a dream forever when you see my face and realize you’re awake. Darling, welcome to your holiday… it’s not too extravagant, but at least you know you’re awake. The first time you said “I want you,” you should’ve realized what you were getting yourself into. You’re not just loving me, you’re loving my flaws, my faults, my doubts… hell, that’s everything. At least you know that I’m just waiting for the seasons to change, waiting for the mask to melt off your face. Show me the girl I first met that day.

I told myself it’ll be alright eventually, despite these constant threats to my fragile self esteem. When I sleep, all I see is my face looking back at me, telling myself to make impossible a possibility. It just seems the more I’m told that this ain’t real, that’s how I know that it is. I’m breaking bones trying to reach this goal, and you’re damn right I’m a dreamer. Because in my head, this all makes sense, and if you don’t believe me, then believe in me. I wrote a record in my room just to see if I had a shot at escaping a city of strangers saying it’s far less likely than not. “Hey man, how’d you like that song? Was that chorus not catchy enough?” Well, I’ll write a thousand songs until I feel I’ve wrote the perfect one.

Vacation 03:36
Watching the traffic lights fly by used to be a comforting sight, now it serves to remind me that I’m always standing still. I’m staring at the stars overhead wishing for a bit of happiness. I’ll be alright, I’m just a little lost this week and I miss the nights I used to fall asleep wishing I could have you next to me. I need to take a vacation, I need to get away for one or two, or maybe more than a few weeks. I need to take a vacation, I need to get away, or maybe I just need some sleep. I should’ve never said to you, “I have nothing left to lose.” The truth is that I didn’t know what I had. I may have called you once or twice to see if I was worth your time, and the ringing in my ears was more than I could stand. Within walking distance, there’s a train leaving Michigan, and I would give you anything to just be on it. We’ll get out of this state for a minute with only what’s in our pockets, never once looking at the destination on the ticket.

about

Vacation is our 9-song debut record, recorded between the months of January and May in the spring of 2011, in a garage in the middle of Northern Michigan. Although we are a 5-piece band now, the album was almost entirely a collaboration between the producer (Alan Follette), my friend Randall Erno playing drums, and me doing basically everything else. The overall theme of the record is escapism, just talking about going on a vacation, hopping on a train, and getting away from everything in your life that's dragging you down. I wrote the record as a means of getting over depression, hence the consistently happy, upbeat mood throughout. It's all about forgetting your troubles, so grab a friend, come out to a show and sing along!
If you love the record, please buy a copy to show your support. It's super cheap and it goes to a good cause: helping this band continue to tour and record new music!
